The incident occurred as the Bengaluru-Yesvantpur Express traversed the down line, during which dust from nearby ballast was observed billowing, leading the train’s driver to mistakenly believe there was a fire, prompting an emergency stop. This misunderstanding resulted in several passengers disembarking and subsequently being hit by an oncoming EMU train.

Prime Minister Modi has expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, extending his condolences to the bereaved families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.

Regarding the railway’s response, they clarified that there was no fire incident, attributing the train’s halt to the activation of the alarm chain. At this juncture, two individuals on the tracks were fatally struck by a MEMU train. The railway authority confirmed that those deceased were not passengers of the halted train and announced the formation of a three-member committee to thoroughly investigate the circumstances of this accident.

The Jamtara Deputy Commissioner also addressed the situation, noting that several passengers were run over at Kalajharia railway station, with the exact death toll pending confirmation. Emergency medical teams and ambulances have been dispatched to the scene to provide necessary assistance.
