IIT Student Detained in Assam While Allegedly En Route to Join ISIS

An IIT-Guwahati student who had reportedly pledged allegiance to ISIS and was traveling to join the terrorist group was detained in Hajo on the evening of March 23, according to police sources. The arrest comes four days after the apprehension of Haris Farooqi, also known as Harish Ajmal Farukhi, and his associate Anurag Singh, alias Rehan, who were arrested in Dhubri district after crossing over from Bangladesh.

The Director-General of Police, G.P. Singh, confirmed the detention of the IIT-Guwahati student and stated that further lawful action would be taken. The Additional Superintendent of Police (STF), Kalyan Kumar Pathak, revealed that an investigation was initiated after the police received an email from the student, claiming that he was en route to joining ISIS.

Upon receiving the email, authorities at IIT-Guwahati were immediately notified and informed the police that the student had been missing since noon, with his mobile phone switched off. A search operation was launched, and with the assistance of local residents, the student was apprehended in the Hajo area, approximately 30 km from Guwahati, in the evening.

The student, a fourth-year student from Okhla in Delhi, was taken to the STF office for initial questioning. During the search of his hostel room, a black flag resembling that of ISIS was discovered. The flag will be sent to specialized agencies for verification. The authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the email sent by the student and are examining the seized items.

Further details and information regarding the student’s intentions cannot be disclosed at this stage, as the investigation is ongoing. The police are dedicated to uncovering the truth and ensuring the safety and security of the region.
